Dueling Million Dollar Comic Books

Well the news broke recently about another record breaking comic book, this time from Heritage Auctions, who sold the comic for the $1,075,500 (which includes the buyers premium). Seems we have a bit of the dueling million dollar comics! Lon Allen, Director of the Comics Department said, "...we suspected it could go as high as $800,000. The fact that it then topped seven figures, and nosed out Superman for the world record price was simply amazing to us all. I've never been in an auction room with such excitement." Would've been great to be in that room.

It must feel good for DC Comics who has these two fine heroes in their main lineup. Things have been turning rosy for DC lately. The formation of DC Entertainment, spectacular relaunch of the Batman movies, lots of buzz about their current titles, and breaking new ground in comics with their weekly series and newspaper format Wednesday Comics. I bet their loving this.

The One Million Dollar Comic Book

Ever dreamed of having a million dollars? What would you do with it? How about buy one comic book, thats right, one single comic book. Well that is what a recent investor did to acquire one of the only highest known graded Action Comics #1, the first appearance of Superman. The group that brokered the deal is Comicconnect.com a comic book consignment and auction site. They broke the record for the price of a single comic book which they also set with another copy of Action Comics #1 at $317,200.

So why such a high price for a comic book? Well according to the Comic Connect site, this comic is, "Only about 100 copies Action Comics #1 remain in existence, and of those 100, only two have received a grading of 8.0 (Very Fine) or higher. This particular book is one of them, making it among the rarest of the rare."

There is also the fact that commodities (goods like gold, oil, and even comics) are going up in value as the stock market has fluctuated. When stock prices fall, goods often go up in price. I'm no market expert, but we've all seen the price of gas go up and my brother who is in the jewelry business says gold is at its highest its ever been.

Even if I had a million, I don't know if I'd be buying a copy of Action Comics #1. Maybe if I had many many millions, but even then I imagine it would be a hard sell for the wife. Investing in comics can be a difficult thing, especially for the comic fan. The problem for us is that we have an invested interest in the characters we are collecting. I know for me I have many Holy Grails for comics I'd love to own. Avengers #4, Captain America #100, and Captain America Comics #1 are among those for sure. If I had the money, I know I'd pay more than they are worth to acquire those comics for my collection. Thats the trouble with collectors and their collectibles. If one is not careful, a collector can get into a bit of trouble by paying too much for a comic. But I guess when it comes down to it, does it really matter? Have you ever paid more for a comic simply because you needed it for your collection or just had to have it?
