Comic books and graphic novels have long captured the imaginations of children, teens and adults everywhere. Many people have read comics when they were kids, occasionally hiding a comic book inside of a school book in order to read it while their teacher lectured.  The frequency of which we would enjoy these tales usually decreased the more we grew into adulthood however, they still have a tremendous appeal.  Comic books have usually been thought of as nothing more than mere “children’s books” however, they have come a long way over the years.

Comics and graphic novels address a range of societal issues and allow us to showcase what is happening in the world today. Some comic books act only as plot devices, some as social commentary, and others try to make us think.

Their has been a rise in interest in comics in recent years primarily due to the entertainment industry and the internet.  The internet has given people new options for buying, selling and trading comic books with the online marketplace and websites such as Ebay and Amazon.com.  Online comic book forums and message boards have also given comic book readers and collectors an instrument through which to connect and share their passion for this creative medium and have piqued interest in those new to comic culture.

Comics are now recognized as a valued medium and we can see their influence in just about every sector of our entertainment. From movies to television and from video games to amusement parks, comics have had a tremendous impact on our culture. As a result comics are no longer being censored in the sense of what should and shouldn't be in them. This may be a bad thing for some but for others it is a basic part of free speech and the first amendment.

Comic books are a firm staple of many people. With these comics people can follow the exploits of their favorite series without having to worry about missing any action. There are many different comic book types that are well known but many of us like getting comic book action from comics like Marvel comic books.

The various charters that are depicted in these comics are ones that many of us have grown up with. Just as we are familiar with Superman we know the adventures of Spiderman, the Hulk, and the Scarlet Witch. We also recognize their many villains like the Green Goblin, Magneto, Mr. Sinister and many other villains and superheroes.

Marvel comics are very well known and today some of these action comics have been transformed into full length movies like that of the X-Men Movies, Spiderman and even the DareDevil. These movies and the crowds of people who come to see them just reaffirm that Marvel comic books have a way of reaching into various aspects of our lives.

Since many people both young and old love reading the various adventures of their favorite action characters sometimes these Marvel comic books take their cartoon characters and change them slightly to reflect the various moods and feelings that are currently around.

The next time that you decide to buy some of your comic book choices and you see some Marvel comic books you may want to see if you can find ones from a few years ago as well as the more current ones.

You will probably be surprised to see that not only does the artwork of the comic books look different but the action series itself may have some interesting storylines and other new characters making their appearance. These changes are mainly due to the fact that even Marvel comic books need to keep up with the times.

For this reason you will see that these different comic books are constantly looking different but they generally try to follow the original story lines. Without seeing the various exploits of Marvel super heroes and heroines like the Scarlet Witch, Jean Grey from the X-Men and Spider Man you will probably feel let down.

As a result all of the Marvel Comic books feature their well known characters in the original storyline and sometimes they are in adventures in different series. This way you get double the pleasure. The next time that you are looking to buy some Marvel comic books you may want to choose the various old and new versions of these comic books. You will enjoy all of the action that is revealed before your eyes.

Comic books have carried a negative stigma for as long as they have existed.  Viewed as juvenile, cheap or inferior forms of literature and art, comic books have had an uphill battle from day one.  But with the success of comic books as represented in Hollywood, maybe, just maybe the perception of them will change.

The truth is, however, that in some circles comic books will always represent what's wrong with the world, like many other forms of entertainment.  Video games and television have been put under a similar assault by parent groups, religious groups and highbrow elitists that just don't get their appeal and blame them for the moral downslide of society.  Music over the past few decades has suffered the same kind of negative backlash.

The beautiful thing about comic books, though, is what sets them apart from all other forms of art.  And that thing is the marriage of art and writing that come together in a symphony of story unparalleled.  Much like the film and television industries possess the unique coupling of stories, and sometimes graphic art, with live action, or moving pictures, comic books are unique in the way they present a story.

For instance, take the art in comic books.  Any artist worth his salt can illustrate a still portrait or landscape scene, or what have you. Similarly, any abstract artist with any merit can illustrate a still masterpiece of odd attraction and sensibility.  But it takes a special kind of skill to use those same artistic abilities and techniques to transform a writer's words to sequential story-telling, depicting constant movement and a wide range of emotions panel after panel, page after page.  Likewise, it's a chore for a writer to structure their words in such a way that allows the art to do the descriptive 'talking' and fill in the dialogue in the appropriate places while still maintaining an interesting and flowing story.  And this is what comic books are made of.

Look at an artist like David Mack who pushes the medium of comic books into another level with his use of paints and materials to create abstract beauty while still maintaining the comic form.  Or the many acclaimed novelists, like Orson Scott Card and Stephen King, for example, who have made the transition to comics bringing their same talents and skill to the mixed media art form.  Yet comic books continue to be disrespected, or looked at as substandard as compared to other media.

That perception may never change, but whether comic books continue to thrive and grow, or eventually fade away, there will never be another art form that quite does what comic books are able to do.
